What is Assistive Technology?
Assistive technology is defined
as “Any item, piece of equipment, product system, whether
acquired commercially, modified, or customized, that is used
to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of
individuals with disabilities.” Public Law 108-364
This includes devices and services that assist people with
disabilities increase their independence whether they are at
home, school, work or enjoying recreation.
Some examples of assistive technology include:

Hearing aids

Augmentative Communication Devices

Ramps
-
Wheelchairs
-
Jar openers
-
Raised toilet seats
-
Cars and vans that are modified

Computers that can be used with
voice activation software

Changes in equipment used at work.
For example, rearranging lighting for a person with limited
vision or rearranging furniture to make maneuverability easier.

Electronic books

CCTV’s

Handhelds (PDA’s)
Recreation and leisure materials:

battery-operated toys that operate
with switches

adapted tools for gardening

playing cards and board games in
braille
As you can see, there are many examples
of assistive technology. Technology is EVERYWHERE and for EVERYONE!
